Ever since 1508, when Leonardo DaVinci described  in his Codex of the eye, Manual D, how to alter vision using water, scientists have been keen to research, develop, and finally improve the contact lens.

Contact Lenses; Contact Lens Care

If you wear contact lenses, you need to keep well in mind what you need to do to care properly for your contact lenses.   In this article, we share with you some tried and true tips associated with caring for contact lenses.

Of course, if you have any specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses or caring for contact lenses, you need to meet with your eye care professional.  An eye care professional can provide you with all of the information you need to care for your contact lenses ... and to care for your precious eyes.

Basic Steps Associated with the Care of Your Contact Lenses

There are some basic steps that all contact wearers must adhere to for proper contact lens care and to ensure that they keep their eyes healthy.

Wash Your Hands Before You Touch Your Contact Lenses

First, you must wash your hands so that you don’t transfer any germs onto the contact and then into the eye.  Try not to use scented or oily soaps and make sure that you have not picked up any lint from a towel that you have used.

Clean Your Contact Lenses as Directed

Contact lenses require frequent cleaning and the products that are recommended for your specific lenses need to be used.  The dirt and buildup on contacts left on the contact will impair your vision and also cause irritation to the eyes.  You will notice some lenses require rubbing the lens to clean them and others merely need to be rinsed.

Rinse Your Contacts Thoroughly After Cleaning

Make sure that you rinse the contacts after you have cleaned them to remove the buildup and then you can place them into the lens holder.  Fill the lens holder with the soaking and disinfecting solution.  Disinfecting kills the germs and will prevent you from getting infections of the eye.

Follow Recommendations From Your Eye Care Professional

When you purchase your contact lenses the eye care specialist will recommend certain products that should be used with your specific type of contact lenses.  These brand names are usually the ones that are the best to use and are recommended by the eye care specialist because of their quality and consistency of excellence.  Quite often you will receive some free products when you make your first contact purchase.  Normally these products are available for purchase at any pharmacy or grocery store and are relatively inexpensive.

Stick with a Brand that has Worked for You in the Past

When it comes time for you to purchase some new products, you may be tempted to buy a brand that is different because the cost is lower, but this is not always a wise idea.  What you may save may not be worth the risk of a possibly inferior product.  Although all these products are safe and are FDA approved, they are not always the same as the brand name.  Many pharmacies and large grocers have their own private labels of products.  These products are not made by this company but purchased from an outside purveyor and their label is put on the product.  This is where the problem can arise.  The pharmacy or grocer does not know if the product is consistent with how it was made previously and cannot ensure that it will be exactly the same as before.  Therefore you may like the product the first time and it may work and then the second time, it is a little different and doesn’t work for you at all.  So overall, it is better to stick with a name brand like the one your eye care specialist recommends.
